Riverdale Modern

To say that this front yard was a jungle is probably an understatement as the before pictures will attest. You could hardly see the house, or walk up the walkway without hitting your head on a bush.

The client wanted a pure modern landscape while still maintaining some privacy from the neighbours and city sidewalk. In order to achieve this we removed everything except for the mature Fir tree, which we pruned the lower branches.

The clean horizontal lines of the warm cedar screens provide an appealing dramatic contrast with the large 24”x36” Banas black flagstones. Creating strong interest from the street making you want to enter, yet reminding you that only guests are welcome.

The masses of fine textured foliage plants give harmony and cohesion to the space. The Yew hedges and Feather Reed Grasses add to the winter interest and complete a sense of enclosure. The tall vertical grasses blow in the wind, some of which are planted linearly in black rectangular planters.

This home finds itself between properties that are not well maintained which only adds to it’s attractive appeal as a modern oasis in a barren territory of it’s street’s renovation malaise.

- As is often the case the client approached us to open up the backyard to more usable areas including an outdoor living room. 

- They wanted us to design a hot tub nook that was accessible directly from the upper deck off their main indoor living areas. 

- There was the need to generally beautify their backyard with plantings creating a lush backdrop. In the end, we believe it was achieved.

St. Clair West Front Yard Makeover

This St. Clair West front yard was needing an upgrade. The porch was crumbling. the position of the existing walkway was small and in an odd place not bringing one into the front door. 

The client wanted the walkway to start near the middle of the property. To create interest, the light grey concrete paver that we chose was a linear one which was used in alternating rectangles changing the direction in each one.

The front porch was completely demolished and rebuilt with a poured concrete foundation and faced with black Indian flagstones. 

Planting was also modern with Yews up against the house, low lime coloured ornamental grasses to contrast in front, Boxwoods, Hydrangea, and a Beech tree. When the Yew and Boxwood planting matures and is shaped into hedges, this front yard will have great curb appeal.  

North York Front Yard Makeover

- New elegant and formal homes are springing up all over Toronto in older neighbourhoods replacing smaller more modest homes of another era. 

- This stucco home had a dated, tired landscape. The original owners who built the house asked us to update the exterior.

- The front porch was redone with faux natural stone adding a step that replaced the awkward interlock landing. 

- Connecting to the porch is a raised matching planter wall in front of the bay window and extending the cohesion further is an L-shaped matching stone wall that was designed further into the landscape.

- The old interlocking brick on the driveway and walkway were replaced with a monolithic 18"x36" structural faux flagstone to bring a grander feeling to the property.

- The plantings are tiered romantic and modern. The new pyramidal oaks on the property line bring a stately look and give some separation from the older more modest home next door.

We think that the home now reflects the 21st century with cleaner lines and massing of plant material.

Bloor West Village Backyard Makeover

- In this modern eclectic design, our clients were particular about minimizing the outdoor living room patio space and maximizing the plantings.

- They were equally specific about creating deep contrast between the black stained fencing and the cedar tones of the deck. It resulted in a dramatic effect, pleasing to the eye.

Riverdale Front Yard

- This home north of the Danforth in Toronto was a typical minimally landscaped front yard with a walkway that led straight into the porch steps. 

- The new design creates a more meandering entryway with the entrance on the opposite side. The other portion of the walkway is hidden by a low horizontal board screen creating a sense of mystery. 

- The screens on the property lines create a sense of enclosure and privacy, also adding architectural interest.

- New wrap-around porch steps create a more relaxed approach to the porch while the glass railings give an updated look to the property. 

- Ornamental grasses including Maidengrass and Sioux Blue modernize the look, while the Everlasting Revolution Hydrangea and Bloody Cranesbill add colour. 

- Thirty-one lights give this front yard a spectacular look in the evenings. 

Thornhill Leisure

The client's wish list for their backyard included wanting a lush garden with seating for up to 12 people and to be able to eat outside with other couples and friends. 

They wanted to spend more time outside and wanted no grass. 

They were looking for a modern aesthetic to complement their modern interior choices. 

They wanted a secluded area that they could access with stepping stones that would lead to a swing. Since they wanted no lawn, herbaceous ground cover was installed between the stepping-stones.

Banas Indian flagstone laid in a geometric pattern was chosen for a large patio that spanned the back of the house to create a lounging space and a dining patio. The front edge of the lounging patio was given a classical curved shape to move slightly away from the rectilinear of modern designs.

The existing fencing was a hodgepodge of different styles as sometimes happens in new subdivisions. Horizontal board fencing was built all around, partly by rebuilding some of the fencing, and some facing was done of the existing fence.

A lean-to shed was located on the side of the house to store cushions and bikes. 

Beech trees were installed along the back to give privacy from second story windows on the neighbouring properties. 

Low voltage lighting and irrigation was added. 

Overall a leisure space was created in their backyard where they now want to spend time. 

Danforth Modern Backyard Swim Spa

A very small backyard just north of the Danforth. This was an existing new modern build house where the client wanted a swim spa. 

The red screen is a repetition of a prominent red panel inside the house that has some art hanging on it. It also repeats a red acrylic awning that is over the front entrance on the outside of the house. 

All these concepts were using PVC decking material although it could be built of Ipe or cedar as well. 

The artificial lawn as built with a gravel patio base so that lawn chairs would not sink into it in the future. 

The tall columnar Beech trees frame the backyard and give privacy for people in the swim spa.

Toronto Low Maintenance Backyard

This Downtown Toronto backyard was simply a not very functional deck with some pavers for parking in the back. 

The client wanted it transformed into an outdoor living space that was functional. 

We increased the size of the upper deck and gave enough room on it for dining.

A lower deck was added for an outdoor living room couch with a firetable to add ambience in the evening.

A third functional area was created with interlocking brick pavers for an outdoor fireplace with a couple of chairs for a private nook. 

Horizontal board fencing was built around the backyard to remove the views of the mutual driveway and neighbours backyard parking pad.

Large posts were added to existing shed along with a new formal door with sidelight. 

Low voltage outdoor lighting was installed on the fences, deck railings for additional night time enjoyment of the space.

Being a professional chef the client also wanted to grow herbs vertically so a green wall or vertical garden was added for his herbs and some vegetables. 

Beach Backyard Makeover

•	The original backyard was a do-it-yourselfer with multiple grades, a shed at a lower grade in the back corner, and a wood deck that cantilevered over the lower back grade.

•	Client had a motorcycle and bikes that they wanted to be able to roll into the new shed so rear of backyard needed to come up in grade to allow this function.

•	Existing fencing was an array of styles. Needed a cohesive style throughout.

•	Client wanted a more traditional perennial garden - not too modern – but liked ornamental grasses. Wanted to keep or plant new, Coneflowers, Black Eyed Susan’s, and Peonies.

•	When we demolished the existing deck we found underneath an old foundation for the original garage that was removed years before.

•	The new design incorporated horizontal board fencing with a new matching shed by Summerwood spanning the whole width of the property at the rear.

•	The client was good friends with the neighbour to the north and did not want us to close off part of this side bordering them. 

•	In this small Beach backyard, there was only enough room for a dining patio or a lounging patio. The client opted for dining. 

•	The client wanted some bright red fall colour. We opted for two specimen Serviceberries. 

•	This charming space is loved by these clients.

Downtown Modern

Overgrown front yard, porch pillars leaning, porch in disrepair

Client wants/needs: new porch with new brick pillars and new columns, raised planting area, new walkway, storage area under porch for recycle bins

Client had a perennial garden and wanted to save the existing Mountain Gold Alyssum and re-use in new design

Client loves to garden and loved her Alyssum

The design created a more elegant modern front yard with a modern smooth faced raised planter using Permacon’s Melville Tandem Wall in a Scandina grey with a Banas Kota Black coping to tie into the black windows and door on the house

The new walkway was a mixture of Melville Plank Paver runner pattern in a Scandina grey combined with a random pattern Melville 80 paver in Rockland Black 

The deep contrasts in the pavers, Banas slab step and walls adds interest to this small city front yard

The massing of the Mountain Gold Alyssum in the raised planter added seasonal interest with its vibrant yellows

The Fireglow Japanese Maple in the planter will tone down the height of this two-storey home as it grows

All season colour is created with the combination of Hydrangea, Golden Carex, Astilbe, Morning Light Miscanthus, Golden Tiara Hosta, Black Eyed Susans, Boxwood and Bronze Beauty Ajuga

The modern horizontal board screens on the right of the property defined the property line and created a link between the garden and the porch of similar styling

The Kichler modern path lights continue the modern theme whether daytime or nighttime

Overall a lush garden was maintained for the client who loves to garden but with an updated modern look overall


Midtown Toronto - Eglinton/Avenue Road

We took an unusable backyard in midtown Toronto and created a usable space for entertaining and a large play area for the children. Safety was paramount for their young identical twins. The glass railing provides this protection while maintaining the view to the lower play area. 

The steep slope was made manageable with a set of stone steps and landing which adds architectural interest to this backyard. Privacy cedar fencing was added on the one side to match the existing fence on the other. 

The plantings wrap around the perimeter of the yard and through the slope in the middle. Once this grows in this will make a lush backdrop for both the upper patio and the lower play area.
