BEFORE
The Client’s Vision
Our client reached out with a vision to transform their front yard. They had received city approval for a front yard parking pad and wanted to incorporate it into a new, cohesive design that balanced the traditional Victorian charm of their home with a modern front yard landscaping aesthetic. They imagined extensive changes, including replacing the existing porch with stone steps leading to a newly created landing.
The Challenges
The project required striking the right balance between traditional and modern elements to respect the classic architecture of the Victorian home while giving it a fresh, updated look. We also had to meet city regulations, such as planting a new tree and ensuring the design complemented the neighbourhood’s historic character.
Modern Front Yard Landscaping
To achieve the perfect blend of classic and contemporary, we recommended Basalt-colored Unilock Town Hall permeable pavers, which have a cobblestone look that adds a nod to tradition while offering a modern touch. These were paired with smooth modern pavers for the walkway to create a beautiful contrast. Natural stone slab steps were selected to lead up to a landing, replacing the original porch and adding a refined, elegant look to the entrance.
We incorporated formal plantings of boxwood and Yew hedging to bring a sense of structure and formality, aligning with the classic Victorian style while giving the front yard a polished, clean appearance. A new city tree was also planted in line with city regulations, adding a touch of natural beauty to the space.
Finishing Touches
The landscape design emphasized symmetry and simplicity, with the formal hedging providing a consistent frame around the new parking pad and the walkway. This created a cohesive look that felt modern yet honored the traditional style of the home.
The Result
The final result is a front yard that seamlessly integrates a modern parking solution with the timeless charm of this Victorian home in High Park, Toronto. The combination of permeable cobblestone pavers, smooth walkway pavers, and formal plantings gave the front yard the perfect blend of old and new. The client now enjoys a functional, visually striking front yard that enhances curb appeal while meeting their practical needs.
