The Client’s Dream
Our client wanted to give their backyard a total makeover. The old, raised deck wasn’t functional anymore. They imagined a sleek, modern outdoor space that felt like an extension of their home. The big goals? A perfect spot for their favourite four-post double lounger, incorporating a fire bowl (a special gift from the client’s father), easy access to the BBQ, and some much-needed privacy from neighbours. Low maintenance was key — they wanted to enjoy the space, not constantly work on it!
Landscape Design for Small Yards
We had to remove the old single-level deck and work with a sloped yard. To make the most of the space, we built a multi-tiered deck with a retaining wall to level things out. Privacy was a top concern, especially with the neighbour’s elevated deck peering into the yard, so we had to get creative. On top of that, the design had to balance lounging, dining, entertaining, and storage—all without feeling cluttered.
The Transformation
The result is a backyard that feels like a true retreat. We built a gorgeous multi-tiered composite deck that gives each zone its own space while keeping everything connected. The centrepiece is a sleek aluminum pergola with adjustable slats for shade, privacy and rain protection—perfect for setting the mood, especially when paired with the cozy fire bowl. We added strategic plantings of cedars and Columnar Beech trees for extra privacy, along with vibrant pops of colour from Coral Bells and Black-Eyed Susans. The whole space comes alive at night with soft, low-voltage lighting in the garden, on the steps, and in the pergola, creating a magical vibe for evening entertaining.
